Protecting your precious Super King

Friday, November 9, 2018 7:37:40 AM America/New_York

The super King gets its name from its enormous 6’ x 6’6” size and is the UK equivalent of an American King size. This large size provides a superior sleeping experience for those who have the space; however moving it can be a daunting task.

Whether you’re moving houses, selling your old mattress or unloading your newly purchased super king, your main concern will be the same: Getting your mattress from A to B unscathed. This guide will give you some helpful tips and advice to help make this as smooth a process as possible.

  • Avoid moving your mattress alone – injuries come easy from manual handling.
  • Many of these are attributed to improper technique/procedure or attempting to handle loads which are too heavy.
  • Not all mattresses are too heavy; however their shape means carrying them can be awkward.
  • Your vision may be limited during handling – move any hazards out of your way.
  • Super king mattresses are larger and heavier than smaller sizes.
  • Consider friends, family and colleagues who could help you move your mattress.

A protective cover will make your life a whole lot easier.  Being the giver of a good nights sleep, your mattress deserves your attention and care and so you should consider options for providing the best protection.

Mattress covers:

  • Prevent damage
  • Extend a mattress’ life-span
  • Are used and recommended by professionals

There are many mattress protectors available on the market. Some provide better protection than others; some are too thin and others too bulky. A perfect in-between is Britwrap’s protective mattress bag, which is:

  • Made from highly durable Polypropylene, making it scuff and tear resistant, protecting your mattress when it is under the most strain it will face.
  • Equipped with heavy duty handles which enable you to rotate your mattress to fit it through doorways and corridors.
  • A way to avoid straining your back and ensure you use a proper lifting technique.
  • Available for roll-up mattresses., such as memory foam mattresses which, thanks to their flexibility, take up much less space.
  • Durable and reusable, meaning they can be used over and over again.

  • Think your route from bedroom to vehicle through carefully.
  • Consider where your mattress could sustain damage, or you could hurt yourself.
  • You should make sure there are no tripping hazards or small objects lying around which might cause you a problem.
  • Will your mattress fit through certain spaces in your house? Its best practise to measure these to avoid getting stuck.
  • Make sure your volunteers, cover and vehicle are sorted by your moving day!

  • Most cars won’t fit a mattress in the boot or on the backseat. Even those with the most space on the market don’t have the width. If you have the proper equipment to pull it off safely, larger 4x4s and other SUVs can take a mattress on the roof, however if you have no experience with this kind of thing make sure you exercise plenty of caution and seek the help of someone who has.
  • Accordingly, the go-to option for moving mattresses is a van or if you’re moving houses, a truck/large van. Although most of these will fit most mattress sizes, it is good practise just to measure beforehand in case, as you want everything to go smoothly on the day.
